Before entering the business world, Carlos was a professional tennis player, traveling the world
playing professional tournaments, such as Wimbeldon.
Carlos played recreationally like most kids, but didn't have a lesson from a pro until
he was 15. The Club's Pro Don Prince asked his father if he could give him some lessons because
he thought he showed promise - he was tall, awkward and left-handed with no quickness. To this
day he wonders what he saw! The first lesson he [attempted] to teach Carlos the slice backhand. Carlos
will never forget it-in the one-hour lesson he only hit 2-3 perfect slices, but it was such an
incredible feeling and such a "cool" shot, the way the ball skimmed low over the court after it
bounced, that he was hooked! After a summer of lessons with Don Prince, Carlos went out for the high school
team at Menlo-Atherton and barely made it as a sophomore, but improved steadily over the next 2 years,
playing #1, then going on to play at Cal, and then professionally.
Personal Narrative: Carlos was born in San Francisco and grew up in Atherton. He is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley.
Carlos is married and has 3 children whom he enjoys coaching in soccer, baseball, basketball and tennis.
