BOY'S TENNIS KICKS OFF 2008 SEASON - The Boy's Tennis Team
kicked off the 2008 season with an early pre-season walloping of arch
rival Woodside, crushing the Wildcats 6-1. The Bears were led by their
No. 1 player, Junior George Horowitz. Horowitz annihilated Woodside's
Frosh sensation, Kevin Bui, 6-0, 6-0. The senior laden Bears next take
on Serra at M-A on Thursday, followed by a road trip to Lowell in San
Francisco on Friday.
BEARS SINK SERRA – The M-A Boy’s
Tennis Team continued their pre-season winning ways with a 6-1
drubbing of athletic powerhouse Serra of San Mateo. The Bears
struggled early but found their rhythm cruised to victory over the
Padres. Outstanding performances were turned in by Junior George
Horowitz and Seniors Roland Smith and Matt Hubbell.
BEARS UNDEFEATED IN PRE-SEASON – The Bear Netters upped their
record to 3-0 on the year with a 7-0 thrashing of Hillsdale of San
Mateo. The Bears are starting to find their form as they did not drop
a set. Senior Carson Weiss, after an all league career as the Bear’s
doubles specialist, took advantage of his first start as a singles
player and led the way with a convincing win.
FROSH SOPH KICK OFF THEIR SEASON WITH A BIG WIN – With the
Varsity taking a much needed break, the M-a Frosh Soph kicked off
their season with a match against the mighty Titans of Gunn in Los
Altos. The Bear squad is as talented and deep a team as any team at
M-A in a decade, which bodes well for the future of the Varsity. Gunn
was tough at every position, but the young Bears took the match 4-3.
BEARS WIN LEAGUE OPENER – The M-A Tennis Team opened PAL
league play with against perennial power Mills of Millbrae. The
senior laden, experienced Bear squad proved to beh too much for the
Vikings of Mills, sweeping them 7-0. The Bears were led again by the
exceptional play of Senior Carson Weiss and Junior George Horowitz.
The Bears Frosh Soph squad
remained undefeated with a hard fought 3-2 victory over the Mills
Frosh Soph.
M-A TENNIS PICKS UP ANOTHER WIN -
A day after suffering their first loss of the season in a non-league
match to a powerful Homestead squad, the Bear Netters got back on
the winning track with a resounding 7-0 demolition of the Dons of
Aragon. Dominant performances were turned in by the 3 doubles teams
of Viliami Talakai/Takai Tuionetoa, Roland Smith/Zack Wentz and Noah
Greenberg/Alden Mitchell. The Bears upped their record to 4-1 on
the season.
BEARS REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE PLAY
- After a rain delayed 1 point heartbreaking loss to SCVAL
champ and nationally ranked Gunn, the Bears bounced back with a
sound thrashing of perennial power Lowell of San Francisco. The 7-0
shutout put the Bears record at 5-2. The Bears face a stern test as
they take on defending Norcal champ, Menlo this week. The Bear
squad gained some much needed strength at the doubles position with
the return of doubles specialist Matt Aguilar from the baskeball
team.
BEAR'S TENNIS TAKING ON ALL COMERS -
The better the competition, the more a team improves. The Tennis
Bear's coaching staff scheduled the toughest schedule in school
history with this philosophy in mind. The Bears have scheduled
several top SCVAL teams this season, all of whom are some of the
best on the Peninsula. After taking defending Norcal Champ Menlo
down to the wire, the Bears have lost two one point heart breakers
to both Gunn and Monta Vista. These are all teams that are
perrenial CCS seeds. Clearly the philosophy is working as the Bears
continue to scare the powerhouses by taking them down to the last
matches. Players who have turned in incredible performances as of
late include George Horowitz, Carson Weiss, Lupe Talakai, Takai
Tuionetoa, Noah Greenberg and Zack Wentz.
M-A TENNIS STRONG IN 3RD PLACE - After
a tough loss to #2 Burlingame and a much needed Spring Break, the
Bears bounced back with two non-league wins, trouncing Cupertino and
Kehillah High School. The Bears record stands at 8-5 and they are
alone in 3rd place in the PAL. The Bears begin their home stand for
the remainder of the season when they take on #1 Menlo at 3:30 on
Tuesday.
The M-A Boy's Tennis
Team hosted #1 ranked Menlo today. The Bears played as well as they
have all season against a fully stocked Menlo team and were in every
match. However, the experienced Knights prevailed 6-1. The lone M-A
win came at #3 doubles where the team of Viliami Talakai, better known
for his play as a linebacker on the football team and Matt Aguilar,
better known as the center on the Bear's Basketball team took their
match, 7-6, 6-4. The Bears next take on San Mateo on Thursday at
M-A. M-A
NETTERS KNOCK OFF SAN
MATEO - On a blustery day at the Child-Aguilar Tennis Facility, the
Bears took on the always tough and mysterious San Mateo Tennis Team.
Their reputation for mystery comes from the fact that teams never know
how they will stack their lineup or what tactics they will employ to
throw their opponents off. The Bear coaching staff reminded the Bear
team to just play their game and they would come out on top. Come out
on top they did as the Bears rolled to a gratifying 7-0 thrashing of
the Bearcats. Top performers for the day included seniors Carson
Weiss, Matt Boles Aguilar, Roland Smith, junior Lupe Talakai and super
soph Alden Mitchell, all of whom only lost a total of 7 games between
them.
BEAR NETTERS TAKE #2 BURLINGAME TO THE
WIRE - After a 6-1 drubbing by the #2 Panthers of Burlingame in
their first meeting, the Bears went into today's match as a more
experienced and better team. The much improved Bears shocked the
Panthers with a quick start, leading in all the matches from the get
go. However, the Panthers regrouped and got back in the match. All
of a sudden a quick Bear start was neutralized by the tough B'game
squad. B'game was leading 3 matches to one, needing only one more
win to clinch the victory. However, super soph, Alden Mitchell
shook off the jitters and took his match in the 3rd set, leaving the
score at 3-3. It came down to the 3rd and final set in #1 doubles.
Senior Roland Smith and junior Takai Tuionetoa came back from a 5-2
deficit in the final set to get to 5-4. The Panthers, however got
the lucky bounces to take the last game and the match. The Bears
will get a final shot in the PAL Playoffs.
BEARS DESTROY DONS! - M-A's Boy's Tennis Team,
fresh off a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to perrenial Blossom Hill league champ,
Leland, came back strong against PAL rival Aragon. The Bears took
their agressions out against the Dons, in a dominating 7-0 victory! Again,
super soph Alden Mitchell was first off the court without losing a game,
followed by the #1 and #2 doubles team of senior Roland Smith/junior Takai
Tuionetoa and senior Noah Greenberg and freshman sensation, Zack Wentz who each
lost only 1 game in their matches. The Bears finish the regular season next
week against San Mateo
and Mills before heading into the PAL Playoffs as the 2nd seed.
