ABOUT BADMINTON
Badminton Rules
There will be about 38 spots available between the Varsity and Junior varsity teams. The Coaches will evaluate each of the players for a number of practices before placing the players on one of the teams.
So your effort and concentration during these early weeks practices will go a long way towards earning a spot the team.
When you become part of the team at M-A you are making a commitment of time, effort, and concentration. You are making this commitment to your teammates, your coaches, and yourself. Badminton is a TEAM sport, and we believe that each athlete needs to be on the court each day to fulfill his potential and to help the team to the best of her ability. Daily practice is mandatory. We will expect the team dressed and on court before the start time stretching.
PLAYERS: Please schedule work, rides, tutors, dates, illness, etc., so as not to conflict with practice.
PARENTS: Please assist us by scheduling vacations and medical/dental appointments so as not to conflict with practices and games.
Attendance and
Punctuality:
It is our preference to trust the athlete on his health status and reastudents for being late for absent. This trust goes both ways. The athletes know that Coach Smith and Coach Watstudent will be on time to practice each day and that they will be committed to their improvement during the entire practice. Athletes need to build the trust with their daily attendance, punctuality, and effort. Take responsibility for your own improvement and your part of the team's improvement. Team captains will be selected to serve as a liaistudent between team and coach and to promote team spirit.
Parents/Athletes: please email: coachhargis@aol.com before 2PM when your athlete is not at school due to illness.
Athletes: if your are late to practice, please bring a note from the teacher or parent for excused tardiness and plan to make up the conditioning you miss after practice. For unexcused tardiness further discussion will be necessary.
Parents/Athletes: On game days, the team needs to be in the parking lot, to our destination, and on the court for warm up on time. If an athlete is late reporting or warming up on game day, he will not play in the first half. Immediately following the game there will be a quick meeting all team members a expected to attend.
The parent is certainly the final arbiter of where they need their children to be, but missed practices, games or meetings will have consequences.
If 9 workouts/games are missed in the spring quarter, he will not receive academic credit for Badminton. Other athletes choosing to miss games for any reastudent will probably miss an equivalent number of games after their return. Players sitting out a game will be expected to assist with the desk or stats during that game.
To provide a positive environment in which each player can develop physically, emotionally and socially.
To enjoy the discipline, hard work and commitment it takes to become a team player.
To learn as much as possible about the sport of badminton, and to encourage others to learn
also.
Team Goals
To have fun and play the fastest sport on land.
To develop strong, positive team spirit and team pride.

To appreciate and learn from each perstudent’s contribution to the team effort.
To experience victory or defeat and place both in their proper perspective.
These will be discussed the first day of practice.
Coaching Goals
To provide both on and off the court experiences to enable each player to grow and develop an understanding of loyalty, pride, integrity, commitment, and the pursuit of excellence within the scope of athletic participation.

TEAM RULES
1. Please review the student handbook for appropriate on and off court conduct of a
Menlo-Atherton athlete.
2. Each individual will have a minimum of a 5-day tryout period. Every attempt will be made to accommodate all individuals who wish to play badminton this year. The size and composition of the team is at the sole discretion of the coach(es), depending on how many individuals tryout.
3. If a player has any unexcused absences, he will be automatically cut from the team. The coach(es) recognize that players sometimes have outside commitments; these situations MUST be brought to the coach(es) attention well in advance of the occurrence, with the exception of unforeseen emergencies, such as funerals. Outside commitments will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
4. All practices are mandatory throughout the entire seastudent.
5. Practices will begin promptly at 3:15pm Monday through Friday and end at 5:15pm. Practice times are subject to change at any time.
6. If a player misses practice the coach must receive written documentation explaining the reastudent for the absence. A signed note from the attending physician or parent must support any health-related absences.
7. If a student-athlete is experiencing academic difficulties he should make extra effort to receive tutoring before school or at lunch to avoid missing practice or game time.
However, academics are a PRIORITY, and if no other options are possible and the situation is justified, the student should attend after school tutoring, and realize that playing time on the badminton court may suffer.
8. Communication between and among coaches, players and parents is essential.
9. Uniforms and other equipment issued by the school or the badminton program must be maintained in proper condition and returned at the end of the seastudent. If a player loses any issued equipment or uniform, or it is stolen, he will be responsible for paying for it.
10. Court shoes are highly recommended for play on court surfaces. Quality rubber-soled running shoes are acceptable for running and any indoor play.
11. Disrepect will not be tolerated. Disrespectful behavior towards a coach, teammate, manager, official, another player or parent will result in a one-game suspension and a written letter of apology must be given to the parties involved.
12. Every player must maintain a GPA of 2.0 to continue team participation. Use your time wisely, and if you are having difficulty in class, see your teacher immediately.
13. Transportation to and from away games is by car. All transportation will meet
Menlo-Atherton High School requirements.
14. Players are expected to assist with equipment, exercises, warm-ups and drills as requested by the coach(es).
15. Players are to strive toward mastery of the fundamental skills of badminton by applying themselves during practices. The players should take pride in their effort and performance as well as the team to which they belong and the school they represent.
Team goals should take precedence over perstudental goals.
16. All players must present completed consent and medical forms signed by their physician and parents before they will be allowed to play.
Drug and Alcohol Policy
Any player using drugs, alcohol or tobacco products will face immediate suspension from the team. No infractions of any kind will be tolerated. For example, the first time a student is discovered using drugs or alcohol, that student will be suspended from any involvement with the team.
Spring Break
Practice will be held during Spring Break from April 14, 2003 to April 18, 2003.
Further details on times and dates will be given at practice. Every effort should be made to schedule family trips around them please.
In order to play badminton you need a badminton racket, and a pair of shoes. The team web site http://m-aboosters.org/sports/badminton/Badminton.html has links to a few websites where you can check out and purchase different kinds of equipment:
A schedule and links can be found at the M-A badminton website: http://m-aboosters.org/sports/badminton/Badminton.html. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
We are very excited to court a Varsity team for this season of badminton at Menlo-Atherton High School. Badminton will follow all the same guidelines as other sports at M-A. Players must always conduct themselves with the highest degree of self-discipline and maturity. Players must commit to learning the fundamental skills of badminton and becoming better badminton players. Throughout the seastudent we will continue to support and be committed to each individual player. We encourage parents to come out and support the boys at their games and other team events. We look forward to working with both the players and parents this seastudent. Please feel free to contact us at any time with any questions or concerns:
